Get Ready with Me for Camp Half-Blood: The Cabins of the Minor Gods

There is no event more important in the life of a demigod than the moment they are officially claimed by their godly parent. The minute you are formally recognized as a child of one of the major Olympians, your world becomes infinitely larger, your strength is magnified, your destiny becomes much more significant . . . and your annoying eccentric personality quirks are finally more understandable.

Unless, perhaps, you’re claimed by a deity who makes you mentally scroll through your superficial familiarity with mythology and ask . . . Wait, which god is that one again?

Or: The god of sleep? Am I really that boring?

Nemesis? Oh, no. Isn’t she supposed to be evil or something?

The power over rainbows? How is that going to be useful in a conflict?

That’s my mom?! Why does she look like an off-brand Athena?

Don’t get us wrong—there’s nothing inherently embarrassing about discovering that your godly parent never had their own temple, much less their own Wikipedia page. After all, you’re still the child of a Greek god, which is still plenty impressive to us mere mortals.

But let’s also face facts: You’re most likely not going to embark on an epic quest or lead your own trio on an unforgettable adventure anytime soon. And that’s okay! Not everyone can be the main character!

It doesn’t mean you can’t still have plenty of fun this summer . . . not too far away from the center of the action. Especially now that Camp Half-Blood has finally constructed new bunks for children of several of the minor gods, with more being planned at this very moment!

Better yet, the new cabins, designed by Annabeth Chase, are replete with modern décor, plenty of luxurious amenities, and state-of-the-art modular, collapsible furniture that we still don’t fully understand (but it seems pretty cool nonetheless!). Expect nothing but the best for the care and comfort of Camp Half-Blood’s background extras seat-fillers newest arrivals!

So, sit back, take it easy, and enjoy your new summer home . . . because well, we don’t really need you to make an appearance in any the main buildings or at any of the exciting outdoor activities at this exact moment. But we’ll definitely let you know when the time comes for you to appear as part of a crowd scene.

Here’s what you need to know to get ready for an assignment to one of the cabins of the minor gods:

Cabin Fourteen: Iris, Goddess of the Rainbow

This goddess is perhaps most famous for her former role as messenger of the gods and her creation of the Iris Message technology, which allows demigods and gods to communicate with one another over vast distances, in lieu of (strictly forbidden) smartphones. But what Iris would rather be known for is her Organic Food and Lifestyles brand.

In case you’re assigned to Cabin Fourteen, you will want to pack a lot of plain white T-shirts because, naturally, you’re going to be spending most of your time at the tie-dye station. Prepare for your bunkmates to be very impressed with each and every design you create.

Alternatively, you could try to rebel against your heretofore absent godly mother by packing an all-black wardrobe and renouncing colors entirely. But be forewarned, this behavior will probably cause Iris to incessantly dote on you and smother you with more love than you’re comfortable with . We’ve seen it happen before.

Cabin Fifteen: Hypnos, God of Slumber

We must be completely honest: Nothing ever happens in this cabin. From all reports, the interior is very nice! Soothing music. A relaxing atmosphere. A calming aroma . . . soft sheets . . . warm blankets . . . fluffy pillows . . . ZZZ.

You get the picture. Don’t bother packing any sleep aids. If you forget your silk pajamas and eye mask, we’re sure there are extras in the cabin. Be prepared to enter hibernation mode this summer. We’re sure you’ll have plenty of amazing adventures in dreamland. And if you’re a child of Hypnos, that’s probably exactly how you wanted to wile the time away anyway!

Just don’t get cranky at the other campers because they forgot to wake you for all the fun activities, like the talent show, or the fire-eating contest, or the battle against invading Laistrygonian Giants. Be grateful that by the end of summer you’ll be one of the only kids at camp without massive bags under your eyes.

Cabin Sixteen: Nemesis, Goddess of Balance

A warning: The children of Nemesis have already developed a reputation at Camp Half-Blood, and it’s not entirely positive. If you’re assigned to Cabin Sixteen, be prepared for your fellow demigods to automatically assume that—just like your godly mother—you take the concepts of balance and retribution way too seriously.

The other campers might assume that you’re mentally keeping score of every social interaction, just waiting for someone to let slip a thoughtless or insensitive comment. Anything that would cause you to embark on another vicious crusade in the name of justice.

And of course, they’d be dead wrong. Obviously, you’re not recording their every word and action in your head, combing them for any excuse to mete out your personal brand of retribution. That would be nuts! Besides, that’s what your notebook is for.

We want you to be yourself, but we also feel the urge to caution you that as long as you’re consumed by your obsession for balance, you might struggle to make friends when you first arrive at camp.

And you also need to learn that not every insult has to be answered with blood and honor. Maybe those kids from Cabin Ten on the opposite side of the Dining Pavilion weren’t staring at you and laughing at your outfit just now, and . . . oh gods, get off the table and put the cutlery down, please!

Cabin Seventeen: Nike, Goddess of Victory

According to the campers of Cabin Seventeen, their godly mother is wiser than Athena, more ruthless than Ares, swifter than Hermes, and a more competent leader than Zeus or Hera. If only she could be given the proper chance to prove her competence.

The only problem is that no matter how awesome and powerful Nike may be . . . no one thinks about her that often! And if she is really that special, why isn’t she a part of the Big Twelve on Mount Olympus?

To be honest, we mostly remember her as the certified freak who once tried to force Percy, Hazel, Leo, and Frank to battle to the death for her own amusement.

Needless to say, Nike’s demigod children have a lot to prove. They’re currently known as the most competitive campers at CHB. In everything from archery to capture the flag to sword fights in the arena, these demigods refuse to settle for anything less than first place.

So, if you are claimed by Nike, be sure to practice putting on your game face, start treating every competition as a life-or-death event, and prepare to perform at the top of your ability in every conceivable area. While you’re at it, get a head start on the long list of plausible excuses as to why the other team’s victory “didn’t actually technically count as a clean win.”

And who knows? Maybe if you try hard enough, people will finally stop confusing your godly parent with a sneaker brand.

Cabin Eighteen: Hebe, Goddess of Youth

If nostalgia is your thing, Cabin Eighteen is the place to be at Camp Half-Blood. Spend enough time here, and you’ll feel like a happy-go-lucky eight-year-old all over again, which is exactly what your godly mother wants from you.

Nothing but playing games, watching cartoons, and cuddling with stuffies from sunup to sundown, if you so choose. But wait, isn’t that past your bedtime?

Of course, you don’t mind an earlier curfew than the other kids at camp, do you? Or that you’ll still be finger-painting pictures of Mommy while your fellow demigods construct highly advanced machinery, compose beautiful symphonies, or, even worse: fall in love and enter a serious relationship. (Gross. Don’t they know about cooties?)

But if spending the whole summer in a state of arrested development just to appease Hebe is really that upsetting to you, don’t cry! Maybe we can find you a juice box or something.

Cabin Nineteen: Tyche, Goddess of Luck

Naturally, the children of Tyche spend most of their time at Camp Half-Blood gambling participating in harmless games of chance. So much so that the interior of their cabin resembles a casino straight out of Vegas.

If you’re assigned to Cabin Nineteen, you can rest easy knowing that you have a distinctly unfair advantage against any other demigod in all your favorite games. And remember, it’s not your responsibility to deny fellow campers who bet their entire life savings of drachma candy on one of your slot machines.

You do have a responsibility, however, to keep your cabin’s interior activities a secret from authority figures like Mr. D and Chiron (for the sake of plausible deniability). Let’s just say we don’t want any unexpected visits from the fine folks at the New York State Gaming Commission. We’re not sure even your godly parent is powerful enough to deal with the likes of them!

Cabin Twenty: Hecate, Goddess of Witchcraft

This is where the magic happens. Literally.

Not that we know much about Cabin Twenty. We try to steer clear of Hecate’s cabin. Not because we’re scared, necessarily. We’ve just heard some unnerving stories of what can happen when you cross children of the Triple Goddess.

All we feel comfortable saying is, whether you’re newly assigned to Cabin Twenty or just visiting, be very careful. Don’t touch any books with an inscription you can’t read. Don’t recite any incantations you’re not already familiar with. And—we really shouldn’t have to tell you this—don’t drink any potions that bubble and glow in the dark.

If you’re claimed as a child of Hecate, you might feel a bit out of place at Camp Half-Blood at first. Your vibes are more mystical than mythical. And you may find that your abilities are far more complex and harder to wrap your head around than standard demigod superpowers inherited from the major gods.

Although we’re sure that, with enough study and practice, you’ll be transforming those pesky denizens of Cabin Eleven into toads in no time. Maybe you’ll even be able to summon actual ghosts while sharing scary stories around the campfire.

If you do manage to become a feared and powerful sorcerer on par with Hecate’s most legendary disciples by the end of summer, we can’t guarantee that you’ll be headlining your own blockbuster franchise any time soon. Sorry about that, but the role of “moody, yet heroic young demigod who can summon the dead” has already been filled, thank you very much. Better luck next year!

Are you a child of a minor god? If so, what’s on your Camp Half-Blood packing list? Be sure to let us know!
