Get Ready with Me for Camp Half-Blood: The Poseidon Cabin

Special Welcome Message for Demigods of Cabin Three:

Avast, ye mateys! Feast your eyes upon Cabin Three, the home for all the demigod children of Poseidon who wash up on the shores of Camp Half-Blood.

But alas, the sea god very rarely finds himself in the company of mortals these days. So, we hardly ever get the opportunity to welcome any of Poseidon’s kids to camp. Of course, Poseidon’s many non-human offspring are always welcome here at Cabin Three. (As long as they can provide at least three references. And they promise not to tie any of our campers to a stretching bed.)

For anyone else, we’re afraid we can only allow you to appreciate Cabin Three from a distance; to simply imagine the saltwater spray, the ocean breeze, and the freedom of the vast open sea that the cabin evokes.

We know how difficult it is for you to resist the call of the blue and remain landlocked. But we also know that no matter how long you can hold your breath underwater, you simply cannot enter the cabin until you are formally claimed by Poseidon. And frankly, we highly doubt you can hold your breath for that long.

Regardless, here is some information we can share about this nautical cabin—in the 0.001% chance that you miraculously are a demigod child of Poseidon and not just an obsessive Percy Jackson superfan who wants to take pictures. (How did you get past the barrier?! Go away! Shoo!)

What’s Inside Cabin Three:

-The lulling sound of ocean waves hitting the shore

-A gentle sea breeze

-The scent of saltwater and fresh ocean air

-Decorative seaweed, coral, and shells

-Netting, a trident, and other fishing equipment

-A portrait of You-Know-Who

-Six bunk beds, four of which haven’t been used in years

-An ornate fountain filled with fish and drachmas (a gift from Poseidon) Note: Needs repair

-Stickers of hippocampi (a gift from Tyson)

-The Minotaur’s horn (a spoil of war from Percy Jackson) Note: Check with Asterion if he needs this back

What You Should Pack:

-Swim trunks and goggles

-Water shoes

-A beach towel

-A waterproof camera

-Sunblock

-One of those pool tube thingies that you blow water out of

-A seashell necklace

-A mundane object that can transform into a deadly weapon

-A saddle that can fit on the back of a winged horse

-A sand dollar (to remind you of dad)

Meet Your (Former) Head Counselor, Percy Jackson:

“Look, I didn’t want to be a half-blood.

“If you’re reading this because you think you might be a child of Poseidon, my advice is—Wait, why am I doing this? There is no way Poseidon has another demigod kid I don’t know about. And I’m pretty sure we would never jeopardize his marriage with Amphitrite like that.

“I don’t have time for this anyway! I’m absolutely drowning in all the summer assignments that I stupidly put off until the very last minute.

“Besides, between all the quests and wars and such, I feel like I barely spent any time at the cabin. And my only bunkmate was Tyson. In all honesty, he was the one who should have been named head counselor.

“So, I don’t know what you really want me to say here. Even if you’re the half-blood kid of another Olympian, there’s no way you can truly ever ‘get ready for Camp Half-Blood.’ From the minute you learn you’re a demigod, your life is completely out of your control. It’s like being thrown directly into the deep end of the pool with no swimming lessons. Or water wings.

“My real advice is: hang on tight, use your noodle, and always surround yourself with trusted friends and allies. And then maybe, if you’re lucky, you’ll survive to see 18. You’re going to face many dangers, and hiding away in a big empty cabin all summer is, unfortunately, not an option for any demigod. In other words: don’t isolate yourself and assume that your powers will automatically keep you safe.

“Oh, wait! I do have another piece of advice for any hypothetical children of Poseidon out there. He may seem completely distant and unapproachable at first, but be patient, give him grace, and he might surprise you. He’s the real deal, and at the end of the day, he doesn’t abandon those he cares about. Even if they don’t live under the sea.

“Wait, no! My real, actual advice for Poseidon’s kids is: Just because you have the ability to talk to fish doesn’t mean that you necessarily want to talk to fish. They’re really not the best conversationalists. It’s not like in Finding Nemo. And guppies are surprisingly insensitive!

“Most fish are pretty narrow-minded. And they definitely aren’t interested in human topics. They can’t focus on one thing for more than a few seconds . . . honestly, it’s kind of like talking to most of the kids from Cabin Five. Except less smelly.”

Still convinced you might be a child of Poseidon? If so, how are you preparing for a stay ay Cabin Three? Be sure to let us know!
