Get Ready with Me for Camp Half-Blood: The Hermes Cabin

A Special Welcome Message for Demigods of Cabin Eleven:

Okay, we know what you’re thinking. Cabin Eleven isn’t exactly the most awe-inspiring building at Camp Half-Blood. Or the cleanest. Or the most structurally sound.

But you know what they say: Comparison is the thief of joy. So, ignore the rest of those stuck-up, fancy-schmancy cabins, because if you’re an unclaimed demigod, or a child of the messenger god Hermes, this rundown shack is home. At least temporarily. (If you’re lucky.)

It’s not all bad news, though! The cabin is often filled to the brim with lost and confused demigods such as yourself. So, at the very least, you’ll never get lonely.

And your capture the flag team is larger and faster than all the other cabins. Even if that means you spend more time tripping over each other than actually scoring a victory.

We can’t blame you if you’re just a little disappointed with this cabin assignment, but we implore you to give Cabin Eleven a chance. This place might surprise you.

Oh, who are we kidding? Cabin Eleven will definitely surprise you.

Like when you wake up with your face covered in shaving cream. Or when your bunkmate invites you out to a “moonlight stroll” and you find everyone else waiting outside with their pants down, cheeks pointed to the sky. Or when all your clothes go missing, only for you to soon realize that they were given to the dryads for an impromptu fashion show.

Might as well level with you: You might be in for a tough stay. All we can really advise is that you learn to grin and bear it. And please try not to overthrow the camp and start a revolution against the gods. It’s really such an inconvenience sometimes.

What’s Inside Cabin Eleven:

-Winged shoes (courtesy of Hermes)

-Not enough beds (There’s room on the floor, though!)

-Something weird and slimy growing in the bathroom. Don’t ask. Best to ignore it.

-Demigod weapons and armaments, none of which are properly stored or organized

-Various traps and snares

-Hidden listening devices

-Smelly socks. So many smelly socks . . .

-Privacy curtains (thank the gods)

-Your missing wallet

-One new friend, at the very least. Unless you’re seriously unsociable.

What You Should Pack:

-A sleeping bag

-An extra set of underwear

-An extra, extra set of underwear

-A lockbox

-A boatload of patience (ideally inherited from your mortal parent)

-Firecrackers, whoopee cushions, miscellaneous mischief makers

Meet Your Head Counselor, Connor Stoll:

“Get lost, kid. We’re full.

“Nah, just kidding. We’re only almost full these days. Lots more space now that they’ve opened those super special state-of-the-art cabins for the kids of minor gods. Don’t hold your breath waiting for a big upgrade to this cabin anytime soon, though!

“As if our cabin needs ‘modular enhancement’ or anything like that. We may not be the prettiest cabin to look at from the outside, but inside, we’re definitely the most fun.

“You’ll soon see that we keep it pretty chill and relaxed here at Cabin Eleven. Simply too many bodies to enforce a strict set of rules. That might be how the other head counselors run their bunks, but I’m smart enough to know that trying to assert any kind of authority over a group of teenage tricksters and thieves is a losing battle.

“Not that I’m a big fan of authority in the first place. I only have three rules for this place: 1. Don’t betray the camp. 2. Don’t join the Titan Army. 3. Don’t wage war against Olympus. Anything else is pretty much fair game. As long as you don’t completely ruin our reputation.

“Now, maybe I shouldn’t be telling you this, but because you look so young and innocent, I’d feel kind of bad if I didn’t share at least a few survival tips that I had to learn the hard way.

“Don’t bother labeling any of your personal items. We don’t pay attention to names on things. Don’t share your Social Security number with Alice or Julia. Seriously. Don’t mess with the kids from Hecate cabin. We’re just now getting over the last hex they placed on us.

“Oh, and if you see a little girl in a red hood hanging by a campfire, you really, really don’t want to play a prank on her. Trust me.

“Other than that, my attitude is: Don’t sweat the small stuff. Have fun whenever you can. And if you wake up in the middle of the night to discover that your bed is floating in the lake, no hard feelings. It’s never personal.

“But if you notice the other campers giving you the side-eye, or keeping their distance from you, yeah, that might be personal. They always assume that we’re plotting something. Or spying on them. Which, yeah, fair. But if anyone ever gives you trouble around here, let me know. We stick up for our own.

“Before my older brother Travis perished . . . or went to college or whatever, he would always look after me and help me get out of trouble. Even if he was usually the one who encouraged me to, like, set stuff on fire, or clog the showers, or paint the Pegasi neon in the first place.

“Can you believe that he’s considering law school?

“But anyway, just like my big bro took care of me, I promise that I will take care of you. Just say the word and I’ll make sure that your bully’s underwear drawer is filled with peanut butter. Extra crunchy.

“Ah, enough of that for now. Just get in there and claim a bed before it’s too late. For me, it’s off to the lake. Cecil is bound to wake up from his afternoon nap any minute now!”

Are you a child of Hermes? Or an unclaimed demigod waiting for a better assignment? Either way, how are you preparing for your stay at Cabin Eleven? Be sure to let us know!
